Introduction

The Chemistry Department is an integral part of the Science Department in Thornhill College. Chemistry teachers are involved in the delivery of Science at Key Stage 3, GCSE Chemistry and the Chemistry component of the CCEA Double Award Science (Modular) at Key Stage 4 and A-level Chemistry.

 

 


Aims of the Chemistry Department

The main aims of the Chemistry Department are:

  • to stimulate an interest in and an enjoyment of Chemistry and its applications;
  • to provide an appropriate body of knowledge for those who may or may not be intending to continue the study of the subject;
  • to develop knowledge and understanding of chemical patterns and principles;
  • to enable students to apply their chemical knowledge and understanding to familiar and unfamiliar situations;
  • to develop the abilities to perform appropriate experiments having due regard for safety and to observe, record and interpret chemical phenomena;
  • to develop the ability to interpret, summarise, evaluate and communicate chemical information;
  • to encourage an appreciation of the scientific, social, economic, environmental and technological aspects of Chemistry.

Assessment

At Key Stage 4 pupils' progress is monitored by:

  • a wide range of formative assessment techniques;
  • regular standardised homework;
  • standardised end of unit tests;
  • whole school examinations.

A similar scheme of assessment operates at A-level.


Extra-curricular Chemistry

As well as being involved in school-based initiatives, students are actively encouraged to participate in chemistry-related activities arranged by outside bodies including the Royal Society of Chemistry. Our Chemistry students have successfully competed in various prestigious events such as the Irish Chemistry Olympiad and the RSC Schools’ Analyst Competition.
