Congratulations to Cara Laverty - Year 9 who has achieved 1st place in the Minor Irish Schools Cross Country Championships in Belfast.

This is the first time in Thornhill history that an individual Irish title has been won by one of our girls.

Out of the 120 runners on the starting line Cara knew there was only one girl standing in her way of the Irish title.

Both girls battled intensely through very muddy and slippery terrain. Cara ran a very tactical race choosing not to take the lead but to sit on her opponent’s shoulder. She looked comfortable and in control but always threatening.

With 200m to go and the finishing line in sight both girls matched each other stride for stride but Cara had the edge and crossed the finish line just ahead of her opponent.

Winning the All Irelands is an outstanding achievement but nothing less than Cara deserves. She is talented, hard working and unassuming. The perfect package for continued success - watch this space!
