The PE Department is delighted to announce our successes at the All Ireland Cross Country Championships, which were held in Clane, County Kildare on Saturday 9th March.

9 of our students competed against the very best Cross Country runners from all across Ireland. To get to this point all 9 girls had qualified from the District and Ulster Championships. Over 1000 athletes compete in every age group across Ireland to get an opportunity to run at this level.

In Year 9, schools compete in all counties to for a chance to represent their county. The top 3 schools from each county are represented. Our Year 9 team qualified as one of three schools to represent Ulster. The Year 9 team consisted of Cara O'Loughlin, Aoife Clarke, Niamh Doherty, Jasmine O'Kane, Veronica O'Neill and Aoibh O'Hare. The team finished 7th overall and Cara O'Loughlin finished in the top 35.

In Year 10, Sophia Byrne had a fantastic run in the Junior race and finished top 45, in a very fast paced, competitive race.

In the Senior Race, Mary Cait Byrne (Year 14) finished 28th. This was a fantastic result and is a great way for Mary Cait to finish her school Cross Country career. Mary Cait has managed to qualify for 3 All Ireland Championships during her 7 years in Thornhill. She is a great ambassador for our school.

Our biggest news from the Championships is that Cara Laverty (Year 11) achieved 4th place in the Intermediate race. This is all the more impressive because Cara was one of the youngest runners in the field, with most runners in Year 12. Cara has now qualified to represent Ireland at the Schools International next month.

This was a great way to finish a very successful Cross Country season. Congratulations goes to Mrs Wallace for her dedication and commitment to training and preparing these girls to compete at this level
