Breaking Bank - a Breakthrough in Banking

Wednesday 8th February saw the official launch of Thornhill’s newest financial institution, 'Breaking Bank', set up by a team of students from Year 13.

The team is taking part in the Build a Bank Challenge organised by First Trust Bank and will compete in the regional final in Monaghan in March against 24 other schools.
The event, held in the school Assembly Hall, was a lively affair, with music provided by DJs Eimear and Yasmin. To the delight of the dozens of pupils who attended slushies and popcorn were provided by Johnny and his team from Mr Slushtails, and cupcakes and other treats by Claire Goodman, owner of the Green Cat Café, Eglinton. All guests were welcomed by Breaking Bank’s Manager Orla McAllister and included prominent local solicitor Louise McShane, Marketing Director of the Millennium Forum, Amanda Hamilton, local accountant Dawn McLaughlin, Managing Director of MPA Recruitment, Mary Pat O’Kane and local businessman Liam Green, owner of Wheelers. All guests have kindly provided sponsorship of the bank and were also on hand to talk to students about their experience of business and enterprise. Also present at the launch was Stephen McLaughlin, representing White Oaks, Breaking Bank’s designated charity. The bank was officially launched by Mayor of Derry and Strabane District Council, Councillor Hilary McClintock and reporters from both the local press and Local Women magazine were in attendance.
Breaking Bank opens every Wednesday during first lunch in the area outside the Oratory-all new customers welcome. As the BB slogan states, “Stick with us and you won’t lose interest.” You can also follow the bank on Facebook-facebook.com/breakingbank, on Twitter @breakingbank and on Instagram.
