Bishop of Derry launches Catholic Schools Week, 2017

On Jan 26th, 2017 Bishop of Derry, Most Reverend Donal McKeown, invited representatives from all Catholic schools in the Diocese to celebrate a mass in St Eugenes Cathedral to launch the beginning of Catholic Schools Week. This is a time when we celebrate our distinctive ethos as a Catholic school.

The theme this year is, ‘Learning with Pope Francis to care for our common home’. Pope Francis wrote a papal letter called ‘Laudato Si’ and in it he tells people that we all have a responsibility to care for God’s creation. Pope Francis calls for action and not just words!.

Next week, in RE classes in Thornhill College, pupils will be introduced to the main teachings of Laudato Si and will be asked to make a pledge or a commitment to make one small practical change to their lives that will be for the betterment of our environment. All these pledges will be displayed in the school oratory on a Tree of Hope.

On Wednesday 8 February 2017, the Archbishop of Glasgow will visit the school and preside over a prayer service when trees will be planted around the school as part of the plan to plant a million trees across Ireland. Our Tree of Hope will form part of this service.
