Junior NetballThe emphasis is on "sport for all" where participation and social interaction are key issues. The primary aim of the P.E. programme is to offer a wide but balanced range of physical activities which will stimulate enjoyment, create a sense of achievement and increase confidence.

We have extensive facilities on our school site including:

Outdoor Facilities
  • tennis courts;
  • all-weather hockey pitches;
  • outdoor basketball courts;
  • an all-weather running track;
  • excellent grass pitches for gaelic football, camogie and soccer;
  • landscaped grounds for cross-country running.
Indoor Facilities
  • a full-sized sports hall;
  • a smaller gymnasium (suitable for basketball, netball, badminton etc);
  • a fitness suite equipped with a range of cardiovascular equipment.





Team Sports

At Thornhill College, we aim to provide pupils with opportunities to participate competitively in a wide range of sports including:

  • Gaelic Football;
  • Soccer;
  • Netball;
  • Athletics (including cross-country running);
  • Swimming

Sports Day

The highlight of the sporting year, with competitive races for all year groups and fun events for all.

Key Stage 3 P.E.

All pupils participate in one double lesson of PE each week. The emphasis is on participation and on providing a variety of activities to give enjoyment, promote physical fitness, develop skills and team work.

The activities include a number of team individual and team sports as well as dance and gymnastics. Here is a selection of the activities in our KS3 programme.

P.E. at KS4

All pupils participate in one double lesson of PE each week. We also offer GCSE PE to those pupils who wish to specialise in PE and obtain a formal qualification.


This is an increasingly popular course. Our pupils follow CCEA GCSE PE which has both practical and theoretical elements.

Pupils are assessed by

  • completing a final written examination (30%)
  • completing practical assessments in three physical activities (50%)
  • completing assessment in Analysis and Improvement of Performance in an Exercise Activity (20%
