Director of Environment and Regeneration and Waste Services Manager from Derry City and Strabane District Council visit Thornhill College Eco-School Team.

On Thursday 16th March 2017 we were privileged at a Thornhill College to receive a visit from Karen Phillips (Director of Environment and Regeneration) and Nicola Doherty (Waste Services Manager) from Derry City and Strabane District Council. Both Karen and Nicola were generous with their time, visiting the school, to speak to our Eco-School group about their work within the council promoting environmental projects throughout the city and wider district. Our guests also listened to a presentation by our students of the journey our school community has made so far to ‘Zero Waste’ through our participation in the Eco-Schools programme.

Our guest speakers commended our students on their hard work and commitment in introducing and running the various recycling initiatives throughout the school including: paper, card, hard plastic, stationery and used battery recycling as well as the composting scheme currently being rolled out. Both our guest speakers are past pupils of Thornhill College and Karen recalled her fond memories as an Environmental Prefect during her time at the school and encouraged our students to keep up their commitment to an ethos of environmental sustainability.
